SUMMER OFFERINGS @ FLATFILEgalleries
On Friday, June 22, FLATFILEgalleries will present its summer exhibitions, opening with a reception from 5-9pm. In COLOR2, a title indicative of her color-field style, Chicago Painter Ulli Rooney will unveil her latest lacquer works, painted for the first time in a variety of sizes, in Gallery A, with the Library housing her large-scale, art brut works on paper.
In Project Room 1, architectural photographer Kate Roth, known for her stunning magazine spreads, premiers her personal work, in Narrative. Wunderkind political artist Wafaa Bilal will project his newest video, 4th of July, and in Gallery B and Project Room 2, FLATFILE will feature TWO WOMEN/WIDE WORLD; lush color photography of Barbara Levy Kipper, and classic black and white images by Hana Jakrlova, from her book, In The Meantime, published in the Czech Republic, The Netherlands, and the UK in 2006.
Ulli Rooney, a native of Latvia, is a well known Chicago painter who has had a dozen solo shows in the US and Germany, and numerous group shows in the US and Europe. Her work is in the collections of Winston & Strawn in LA, London, Washington DC, and Chicago, Duff and Phelps, and many private collections.

Kate Roth, who is a known interior architecture photographer, is showing her personal work for the first time. Her architectural interior work has appeared in Chicago Home and Garden, Elle Décor, Metropolis, Dwell, and Chicago Home among others, and her work is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

Wafaa Bilal, creator of the widely acclaimed Domestic Tension, installed for the first time at FLATFILEgalleries, as well as many other interactive video works, was born in Iraq.
Bilal has become known for artistically pushing the envelope to make socio-political points. A former student turned professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Bilal’s photography and video art has been collected by various private collectors, and by the Museum of Contemporary Photography.
Barbara Levy Kipper is Chairman of the Chas. Levy Company, which was founded by her grandfather 110 years ago. She has been photographing her journeys throughout the world, “searching for images that distill the moment, reflect the colors and textures of a place, or that separates the dynamic detail from its surroundings.” In these photographs from various locations in Asia, color, content, and form tell stories many chapters long, making one feel as if one is studying one’s own memories.

Hana Jakrlova, who lives and works in the Czech Republic, has been photographing Europe for many years in classic Cartier-Bresson fashion.
Her book, In the Meantime, with a forward by Vaclav Havel, was published in several countries in 2006. Jakrlova’s work has appeared in more than a dozen publications in Europe and the US, including Fortune Magazine, the International Herald Tribune, Elle Magazine and National Geographic. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of the Bibliotheque National de France, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Museum of Applied Arts, Prague, among others.

Tuesday, July 17th at 7pm, FLATFILEgalleries will host Au Courant as a part of CADA’s VISION 12.
The artists and curators of the current shows will lead a guided tour of the exhibitions, explaining their processes and concepts, and answering any questions viewers may have. FLATFILEgalleries is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 6pm, or by appointment, and is a member of the Art Dealers Association of Chicago.
