Matthew J Schaefer, the first non-photographer to be represented by FLATFILEgalleries when it added contemporary art to the mix, eschewed color for black and white several years ago, and collectors began to take notice. Now, in this new series, ACCUMULATIONS, Schaefer subtly begins to add small flashes of primary color back into the multiple layers of his graffiti based work. The layers, before heavy and glossy, have gained a softer, sheer quality that allows the canvas to breathe through the paint, imparting a quality of lightness to the work. Schaefer has shown across the Midwest, and his work is in the collections of Shure Corporation and Art Enterprises, Inc, in addition to inclusion in numerous private collections.
