BLACK/WHITE is composed of various media; paintings, photographs, drawings, etchings, and other works on paper. The concept behind the exhibition is that all black and white art hangs well together in a space. The show will include work by gallery artists Matthew J Schaefer, Mary Jane Duffy, Katy Keefe, Adi Holzer, Bob Tanner, Gary Engle, Gillian Brown, Rhonda Wheatley, Michiko Itatani, Monika Wulfers, and Daniel Blanco, and will introduce new gallery artists John Himmelfarb, Carrie Iverson, Michael Argyelan, and Nancy Landin. Guest artists Francesco Avesani will show drawings, and Natalia Ivanevich, etchings. A few words about the new artists in our stable: John Himmelfarb who has recently had published a magnificent Catalogue Raisonné of nearly 40 years of his works, is well known in Chicago for both paintings and works on paper. This show will mark his first exposure to the FLATFILEgalleries audience. Carrie Iverson’s recent show in New York City was reviewed in The Chicago Tribune. Iverson’s works on paper, which are often photo-based, frequently find themselves (as in the NY show) part of larger installations. In BLACK/WHITE she will show new fused glass works on paper. Michael Argyelan is a recent graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His graphic etchings, whether in color or Black and White are powerful studies in composition and balance. Nancy Landin, whose photography has appeared repeatedly in Black and White Magazine, including on a cover, explores the tenderness and tension of everyday life in images that are narrative, ambiguous and haunting.
In the upstairs Project Room, gallery artist Mark DeBernardi will debut his new ILLINOIS SERIES, black and white unique photographs of a variety of meaningful vistas in our state, made in the traditional darkroom, but then altered with the processes DeBernardi has become known for.
In the lower gallery, Bleu, Blanc, Rouge in B&W features images of France, and Paris in particular, by European and American photographers, including gallery artists Lucien Clergue and Ala of France, Hana Jakrlova of Czechoslovakia, American Joe Gallo and guest artists Paul Flaggman (USA) who photographs Paris by night, in beautiful images that clearly illustrate why it is called the city of light, and Alison Harris, who lives and works in Paris with her husband, the writer David Downie, and photographs the everyday things that give Paris its charm. In the lower gallery project room, we feature a video by gallery artist Alexandra Loewe, (AKA XX29), entitled Postcards from Home, filmed in Paris, where she was raised, and still lives.
Alison Harris will be present at the Bastille Day Celebration that signals Vision 11 Opening Night on July 14th, to sign copies of her new book Paris, Paris Journey into the City of Light.

INFINITE RIVER: An Intuitive Painting Workshop. This workshop is designed to liberate the participants from conventional concepts of art making, so that they can fully trust their own innate ability to find joy, connection and release through the creative process. Participants are guided to the center of their body/mind with gentle exercise and tempera on paper. Fears and inhibitions that block the flow of creativity are disarmed so that participants can identify what keeps them disconnected from their intuitive source. A fun and rewarding experience for teens and adults, artists and non-artists alike.

CARVING A PATH OR CARVING A PATH TO THE UNSTRUCK PLACE OR...
It is said that within all beings there is a place of resonance that arises from inside the silence to generate an unstruck sound. Intrinsic to the practice of yoga is the withdrawl from the outer experience to the inner. However, in order to hear the deep resonating vibration from within it isn't silence that we want to surround us, rather it is the most perfect vibrations. It isn't ugliness that we try to avoid, but beauty that we want our eyes to last see, and our ears to hear as we enter into a meditation, shavasana, or moment of peace. Please join Joyce Englander and Jesse Hozeny for this special yoga class. You will be surrounded by the splendor of Zoe Kaufman's paintings, and the magic of Jesse's music. Joyce will be your guide as you practice Sun Salutations, vinyasa through standing poses, arm balances, twists and back bends; and enter into a deep shavasana with the opportunity to withdrawl inside, hearing the resonant sounds of live music.
Cost: $25.00
JOYCE ENGLANDER
"As a freshman in college, I stepped onto a yoga mat for the first time and discovered what I had been searching for a silent place inside myself. Over the last seven years, yoga has helped me to appreciate my body, find grace in my movements, and healing from injuries. However, it is the experience of freedom and space in my thoughts, and responses to life that have kept me engaged and intrigued. I practiced yoga for nearly three years before joining a teacher training to deepen my understanding of the practice. Concurrently, I was studying poetry, and learning how to find creativity in my language within the boundaries of a poetic structure. This became the catalyst for the way that I teach my classes. I try to maintain a structure that students can count on to help them feel safe in their bodies, and secure enough to explore where they have room to grow. However, my sequencing is always fresh, intelligent, and playful. My vinyasa influences come from Ashtanga and Jivamukti yoga, along with other vinyasa flow teachers. The alignment theraputics, and optimistic approach that I teach with come from my training in Anusara. Most importantly, I encourage my students to create a deeper relationship with their breath, and discover what can be revealed through something as simple as an inhale, or an exhale. I am so grateful for the many teachers, students and friends who have shared their knowledge and their questions with me.

DENA MENDES
Hi, I'm Dena Mendes. I am a graduate of Arizona State University with a B.A. in Journalism and a minor in Public Health. I worked as a medical news reporter for KPNX TV 12 in Arizona before moving to Chicago. I have written and produced children's books. My first one, Princess Paris Pink and her Colorful Kingdom is featured on The Princess Paris Pink Cow that was in Chicago's "Cows on Parade" and is now prominently displayed in the "Face to Face" exhibit, an interactive exhibit that teaches kids about equality, at the Chicago Children's Museum, Navy Pier. My second book, "Peachy Keen," is an integral part of the "Healthy Alternatives" program.
My journey began 3 years ago when I saw the need to develop and inform children's awareness about the foods they eat. I realized that they were making compromising choices because they were uninformed. We were certain that when given the facts, kids would make healthier choices. I hunch was correct! Not only did the students hunger for the truth, but so did the teachers and faculty. They were fascinated with our presentation and information and wanted more, more, more! This led to the expansion of our programming; there was a hunger for adult education too. Currently, I teach at Northwestern University"s S.E.P. Program. I have taught at numerous Chicago area schools, hospitals, community organizations and corporations.
