MOZART SUITE, etchings by Austrian artist Ari Holzer
UNDRESSED, Classic Nude Photography by gallery artists Lucien Clergue (France), Jeff Dunas (LA, U.S.) and Claude Andreini (Italy)
March 3 - April 30, 1996
Opening Reception: Friday, March 3, 5-9 pm

Michiko Itatani, who was named Distinguished Artist by the Union League Club in 2005, has taken a departure in this dynamic and fascinating new work. Signature aspects of her classic style are visible, and indeed, things that were minor elements have become the work. Pointillist and gloriously colored large canvasses alternate with Itatani’s white on white work, creating an exhibition not to be missed. A copy of Itatani’s CV, which stretches to 20 pages of International exposure, can be sent by contacting the gallery.

Ari Holzer, a celebrated Austrian artist residing in Denmark, has captured the essence of Mozart’s music in this suite of etchings, many of which are hand colored. From lighthearted Magic Flute to the somber Requiem, to his erotic etchings from Don Giovanni, Holzer translates the music into art. On the 6th of April, from 6-8pm,in conjunction with the exhibition, visiting Austrian virtuoso pianist Ingrid Marsoner will play a concert of Mozart’s music at FLATFILE. This event will be sponsored by The Consulate General of Austria and Thomas Zoells, owner of Pianoforte, located in the Fine Arts Building.

Lucien Clergue is possibly one of the most known photographers of nudes living today. He lives and works in Arles, France, where he founded the Rencontres d’Arles Photo Festival, the largest of its kind in the world, 35 years ago. 72 books of Clergue’s over 50 year career have been published in Europe and the U.S. In 2005, he won the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Lucie Award (International Photography Awards) He was also awarded the Legion d’Honeur by the French Government in 2004.

Jeff Dunas is known for his remarkable and intimate portraits of celebrities and blues singers, but nudes constitute a large part of his extensive body of work. He is a master of lighting, and finds countless ways of portraying the female form. The work captures the essence of classic pin-up photography and transports it to a higher level. Dunas has shown throughout the world, and half a dozen books of his work have been published, with another, The Unscripted Theatre of the Public Place, due out soon

Claude Andreini, who lives and works in Venice, Italy, has been photographing nudes since the beginning of his photographic career. The tenderness and ambiguity of the photographs belies the fact that they are nudes, and appear to be more human architecture. These nudes are sensual and quiet, elegant and adoring. Andreini treats them with the same compositional eye that created his Metropolis series shown earlier this year at FLATFILE, Andreini’s nudes are clean, original and subtle.
