FLATFILEcontemporary presents ARCHITECTURA, which features photography, painting, sculpture and fiber art that is based on, or is about architecture. The show is composed of works by previously un-shown to internationally known artists, photographer Jan Theun van Rees (The Netherlands), fiber artist Lynn Basa (formerly Seattle, now Chicago), Sculptor/mixed-media artist Jennifer Mannebach (Chicago) and architectural wunderkind Walker Thisted (Chicago, now Cornell University Architecture Program).
Jan Theun van Rees, who lives and works in the Netherlands, specializes in architectural photography. The work that will appear in this show was made in Frank Lloyd Wrightís Unity Temple in Oak Park, IL. Van Reesí images are as much about the soul of a building as they are about its structure. He has shown extensively in the Netherlands, Germany and the US.
Lynn Basa, who recently moved to Chicago from Seattle, is becoming well known for her fiber art, tapestries, and rugs created in limited editions. Basa has been profiled in several magazines, including Art & Antiques, Seattle Homes & Lifestyles, and American Style. This, Basa's first solo installation, will occupy the gallery's project space.
Jennifer Mannebach has shown at FLATFILE for over two years; first for her photo-based work, and since the opening of FLATFILEcontemporary last May, as a member of its stable. Mannebach will show a series of new works in glass, fiber, and photographic trans that expand on her remarkable glass and fiber piece shown in the gallery's inaugural exhibit.
Walker Thisted, who is the show's youngest artist, studies at Cornell in the Architectural Program. Thisted's paintings are based on forms, perspective, and spatial sense found in architecture, and are often embellished with bits of trace, Mylar, and other drafting materials. This is Thisted's first gallery show. |
