Mythic
June 6 - July 11, 2003

FLATFILEphotography announces the opening of MYTHIC, featuring the work of Chicago photographer Carrie Notari, and photographer/installation artist Sarah Adams, who lives and works in Rhode Island.

Carrie Notari <Artist Statement>, who currently works almost entirely digitally, has been represented by FLATFILEphotography for the past year. Notari will show an entirely new body of work which will extend and expand upon her ongoing series based on the myth of Persephone and other myths and metaphorical representations. Notari, who often distills her themes and essence from literature, has used the Persephone myth as a metaphor for issues facing contemporary women. Prior work has centered on the writings of Emily Dickenson and Alfred Lord Tennyson. Working large, and often with ethereal depth through the use of multiple layers and images, Notari engages and ensnares the viewer, and creates a visual voyage into other realms. The show will be Notari's first solo show with FLATFILEphotography, and the gallery's first ever, solo show.

Sarah Adams, who studied at Columbia College Chicago, moved to Brooklyn, and ended up in Rhode Island, where she lives and works currently. The Forest series was photographed within a constructed forest where Adams wanders in a series of self portraits. Adams will reconstruct the woodland in the gallery's project room, on which she will project the portraits via a continuous video loop. The work has an eerie stillness that is reminiscent of a deep wooded area, combined with the innocent appearance of its projected inhabitant.
