FLATFILEcontemporary is pleased to announce the opening of FULL SPECTRUM, featuring the paintings of Chicago artist Matthew J. Schaefer, an installation of cast glass heads by Micaela Amato, and a remarkable video installation by Inga McCaslin Frick.

Matthew J Schaefer, whose large scale oils on canvas grace the corporate collections of the Art Enterprises collection of Barack, Ferrazano et.al., and the Shure Corporation (Helmut Jann’s Niles HA-LO building), among others, as well as many private collections including that of the Block family, has been painting for over thirty years. He has had many one-man shows, including exhibits at the Mercantile Exchange Building, Chicago, Loyola Academy, and in 1989, in the World Trade Center Gallery in New York. Schaefer’s earlier, figurative work has given way to strongly hued abstractions with an intricate play of intense color and texture.
Micaela Amato, who currently lives in Pennsylvania, and is a Department Chair at Penn State, has shown a variety of media in both

FLATFILEphotography and the new FLATFILEcontemporary. Amato who was among the emerging artists represented by Marianne Deson in Chicago over 20 years ago, continues to create and show prolifically throughout the United States. Her work is represented in the collections of many museums and universities, including The Rose Museum at Brandeis University, The Palm Springs Desert Art Museum, Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the Denver Museum, as well as many corporate and private collections, including the Chase Manhattan Bank.

Inga McCaslin Frick, who comes from a physics and painting background, has, in the last decade, turned her creativity to Imaging and Digital Arts. An academic, who teaches at Stetson University, McCaslin Frick has done many video installations, some with Gillian Brown, with whom she showed a collaborative video piece in FLATFILEcontemporary’s September 2003 season opening show. McCaslin Frick has received numerous grants and awards, including the prestigious Bunting Award from Harvard University, and has been repeatedly reviewed in many publications including ARTnews, Art in America, and Art Papers. Her work is contained in many collections including the Bibliotheque National and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Cal Arts at Valencia, the Princeton University Art Museum, and Northern Illinois University, among others.
